mixed media

In the arts, a work of art that uses more than one medium. Marcel Duchamp's sculpture To be Looked at (from the Other Side of the Glass), with One Eye, Close to, for Almost an Hour (1918; Museum of Modern Art, New York), using oil paint, lead wire, silver leaf, glass, metal, and wood, is an example of a mixed media work. Mixed media can also describe a performance or work that combines different forms such as lighting effects, sound, and film. It became popular as an art form in the 1960s, with Andy Warhol's ‘Exploding Plastic Inevitable’ show in 1966. Although the term is a recent one, the principle is similar to that of the Gesamtkunstwerk. It may also be applied to the use of modern media, such as the computer, a digital camera, and a copy machine.
