modulation![]() The amplitude, duration, and timing of a series of pulses are controlled in pulse-code modulation, which is relatively simple for digital data already in binary code. Analogue signals need to be converted into a recognizable binary code (a pulse-amplitude modulated signal) by regular sampling of its amplitude. Morse code is a very simple example of pulse-code modulation. In radio transmission, the variation of frequency, or amplitude, of a radio carrier wave, in accordance with the audio characteristics of the speaking voice, music, or other signal being transmitted.
