monism

In philosophy, the theory that reality is made up of only one substance. This view is usually contrasted with dualism, which divides reality into two substances, matter and mind. The Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza saw the one substance as God or Nature. Monism is also sometimes used as a description of a political system in which only one party is permitted to operate.
