monkeypox

In medicine, very rare viral disease of humans that is transmitted by rodents. Its symptoms resemble those of smallpox, with crusted pustules, fever, and cough. The mortality rate is 10% and the disease was on the increase in Congo with 163 cases from 1996 to 1997 (compared with 37 cases between 1981 and 1986) indicating that it may be able to sustain itself in a human population. The smallpox vaccine is effective against monkeypox.
