monocotyledonAngiosperm (flowering plant) having an embryo with a single cotyledon, or seed leaf (as opposed to dicotyledons, which have two). Monocotyledons usually have narrow leaves with parallel veins and smooth edges, and hollow or soft stems. Their flower parts are arranged in threes.
