mountain ash

Flowering tree of the genus Sorbus, family Rosaceae. It has pinnate leaves and large clusters of whitish flowers, followed by scarlet berries. The American mountain ash S. americana grows to 30 ft/9 m and is native to the northeastern USA. The European mountain ash or rowan tree S. aucaparia is planted widely as an ornamental.

Mountain Ash

Town in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff, south Wales, 6 km/4 mi southeast of Aberdare; population with Abercynon (1991) 21,300. It is in a highly industrialized area, with the industrial villages of Abercwmboi and Aberaman nearby.
