mandible

Anatomical name for the lower jaw bone in mammals.

In birds it signifies both upper and lower jaws, together with the beak, although the terms maxilla and mandibula are sometimes used to refer respectively to the upper and lower parts. In insects it applies to the anterior, upper, or outer pairs of jaws.
