mudpuppy

Any of five species of brownish salamanders, living in fresh water in North America. They all breathe in water using external gills. The species N. maculatus is about 20 cm/8 in long. Mudpuppies eat fish, snails, and other invertebrates. (Genus Necturus, family Proteidae.)
