multiple personality disorder

Psychiatric disorder wherein the patient exhibits two or more personalities. Personalities can be widely differing, with the same patient switching between the personalities of children and adults of different ages, sexes, and temperaments. Each personality is distinct, and often unaware of the others. MPD may occur as a result of child abuse, though not all psychiatrists accept that it is a genuine disorder.
