multiplication

One of the four basic operations of arithmetic, usually written in the form a × b or ab, and involving repeated addition in the sense that a is added to itself b times. Multiplication obeys the associative law (for example, a × b × c = c × b × a), the commutative law (a special case of the associative law where there are only two numbers involved; for example, ab = ba), and the distributive law (multiplication over addition; for example, m(a + b) = ma + mb), and every number (except 0) has a multiplicative inverse. The number 1 is the identity for multiplication.
