mumming

In medieval Europe, the custom of groups of masked and disguised figures processing through the streets and entering people's houses. During the winter festivals, they went from house to house and presented gifts after playing dice in silence.

The custom probably derives from Celto-Teutonic or Graeco-Roman ceremonies. By the 14th century it was a sophisticated entertainment, in which the exchange of gifts was complemented by dancing. In the 15th century mumming became increasingly elaborate throughout Europe.
