Muralist

In Mexican art, one of a group of mural painters active mainly in and around Mexico City in the early 20th century. The principal Muralists were Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Considered to be Social Realists, and working during a time of political unrest, they used bright bold colours and dramatic forms to tell stories of struggle and celebrate the rise of the people. The term Muralist may also be applied to artists employed to paint murals for the US government's Federal Art Project, such as Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry.

Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros also painted in the USA, sometimes creating murals alongside Benton and Curry. The works of both the Mexican and US Muralists form a lively commentary on contemporary social issues and modern living. Examples remain in public offices and universities in Mexico and across the USA.
