mycology

The study of fungi (see fungus). Its most important sections are medical and agricultural mycology, since fungi cause many diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Research into fungi has led to their use as fermenters, antibiotics, and hallucinogenic drugs; vitamins, flavourings, and hormones are also obtained from them. In studying fungi, mycologists have made major contributions to the store of biological and biochemical knowledge.
