demyelination

Pathological process in which the myelin sheath insulating some nerve fibres is damaged. It leads to weakness and loss of function in the parts of the body served by damaged nerves. It is the central feature of multiple sclerosis and also occurs in severe diabetes, and in some other conditions involving neurological disease or damage.
