irritability

Property in plants that may lead to responses such as tropisms. Instances of irritability and response to contact include the movement of the leaves of mimosa when they are touched and the springing of Berberis stamens when touched by an insect. This movement causes the anthers to be ripped open to expose the pollen. See also insectivorous plant.
