myxoedema

Thyroid-deficiency disease developing in adult life, most commonly in middle-aged women. The symptoms include loss of energy and appetite, weight gain, inability to keep warm, mental dullness, and dry, puffy skin. It is reversed by giving the thyroid hormone thyroxine.

Pretibial myxoedema is a known manifestation of Graves' disease that occurs in association with diffuse thyroid gland enlargement, exophthalmos, and thyroid acropachy (Kriss 1987).
Enlarged tonsils, acromegaly, myxoedema are all other causes.
Ill health affected Jean's chances of success at school as she suffered scarlet fever and myxoedema, a thyroid deficiency disease.
