négritude

Concept that reasserts black African cultural and aesthetic values against European colonialism; most simply, black intuition is opposed to European logic. It has been current since the 1930s, when it was used originally among French-speaking African writers and intellectuals to emphasize their pride in their own culture. Its adherents have included Léopold Senghor and the Martinique poet, playwright, and politician Aimé Césaire (1913–2008).
