| These perspectives all manifest in terms of the historical, psychological, narrational, political and synthetic concerns of postmodernist discourse. In providing a brief background, we are being not so much self-indulgent, as trying to provide a surrogate for narrational performance in a nutshell. Nor (with the qualified exception of Hou) does one find the psychological and expressionistic de-dramatizations of Antonioni or of Wenders, the severe stylistic and narrational ruptures and theatricality of, say, the Japanese New Wave (especially Oshima Nagisa and Yoshishige Yoshida) or Jacques Rivette, the convergence of fiction and documentary modes associated with Rossellini, Herzog or lmamura, or the austere, existential soul searching of a Bergman or a Dreyer. |
