narration

Means of communication that involves telling a story to others. It is likely to be less precisely factual than an explanation and contains devices of rhetoric (or figures of speech), including exaggeration, and the development of suspense. These are used to engage and entertain listeners, rather than simply to convey information.

These perspectives all manifest in terms of the historical, psychological, narrational, political and synthetic concerns of postmodernist discourse.

Nor (with the qualified exception of Hou) does one find the psychological and expressionistic de-dramatizations of Antonioni or of Wenders, the severe stylistic and narrational ruptures and theatricality of, say, the Japanese New Wave (especially Oshima Nagisa and Yoshishige Yoshida) or Jacques Rivette, the convergence of fiction and documentary modes associated with Rossellini, Herzog or lmamura, or the austere, existential soul searching of a Bergman or a Dreyer.
