nasturtiumAny of a group of plants that includes watercress (N. officinale), a perennial aquatic plant of Europe and Asia, grown as a salad crop. Belonging to a different family altogether, the South American trailing nasturtiums include the cultivated species T. majus, with orange, scarlet, or yellow flowers, and T. minus, which has smaller flowers. (Genus Nasturtium, family Cruciferae; South American genus Tropaeolum, family Tropaeolaceae.) How to thank TFD for its existence? The news of the arrival of the Pharaon had not yet reached the old man, who, mounted on a chair, was amusing himself by training with trembling hand the nasturtiums and sprays of clematis that clambered over the trellis at his window. Thus, when they were passing through Toucques, and came to some windows draped with nasturtiums, he shrugged his shoulders and said: "There's a woman, Madame Lehoussais, who, instead of taking a young man--" Felicite could not catch what followed; the horses began to trot, the donkey to gallop, and they turned into a lane; then a gate swung open, two farm- hands appeared and they all dismounted at the very threshold of the farm-house. The nasturtiums are to be of every sort and shade, and are to climb and creep and grow in bushes, and show their lovely flowers and leaves to the best advantage. |
