neo-realism

Movement in Italian cinema that emerged in the 1940s. It is characterized by its naturalism, social themes, frequent use of nonprofessional actors, and the visual authenticity achieved through location filming, all contributing to a documentary style. Exponents include the directors Vittorio de Sica, Luchino Visconti, and Roberto Rossellini.
