Signs in Eastern chant and Western plainsong (and in some medieval songbooks) indicating the single notes or groups of notes to which each syllable was to be sung. Originally not set on staves, but merely marked above the words and showing neither precise length nor exact pitch, they served as reminders of tunes already known to the singers.
