night heron

One of three species of bird, genus Nycticorax, family Ardeidae, order Ciconiiformes, of very wide distribution. They are most active at night and feed on fish and amphibians. The black-crowned night heron N. nycticorax is about 60 cm/24 in long. The top of its head and its back are black, its wings are black and grey and its breast is pale grey or white. The other species are the yellow-crowned night heron N. violaceus and the rufous night heron N. caledonicus.
