image intensifier

Electronic device that brightens a dark image. Image intensifiers are used for seeing at night; for example, in military situations.

The intensifier first forms an image on a photocathode, which emits electrons in proportion to the intensity of the light falling on it. The electron flow is increased by one or more amplifiers. Finally, a fluorescent screen converts the electrons back into visible light, now bright enough to see.
