nitric oxide

Colourless gas released when metallic copper reacts with nitric acid and when nitrogen and oxygen combine at high temperatures. It is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide on contact with air. Nitric oxide has a wide range of functions in the body. It is involved in the transmission of nerve impulses and the protection of nerve cells against stress. It is released by macrophages in the immune system in response to viral and bacterial infection or to the proliferation of cancer cells. It is also important in the control of blood pressure.
