nitrous acid

Weak acid that, in solution with water, decomposes quickly to form nitric acid and nitrogen oxide (NO).

The decomposition is a disproportionation reaction in which one molecule of nitrous acid gets oxidized to nitric acid (oxidation level +5) by two molecules of its own kind that are in turn reduced to NO (oxidation level +2):

3 HNO2 → HNO3 + 2NO
