non-functional art

    0.09 sec.

non-functional art

Art created purely for aesthetic purposes. Traditionally, printmaking, sculpture, and painting are considered non-functional or ‘fine’ arts, while utilitarian works, such as pottery, tapestries, and metalwork, are classified as functional art. The distinction between the arts was not made until the 18th century, and was generally applied to Western art. Nowadays, such distinction is considered less clear cut, as most viewers can see beauty in a piece of pottery, and purpose (as simple as something to look at) in a work of abstract art.
