nosocomial

Description of any infection acquired in a hospital or other medical facility, whether its effects are seen during the patient's stay or after discharge. Widely prevalent in some hospitals, nosocomial infections threaten patients who are seriously ill or whose immune systems have been suppressed. The threat is compounded by the prevalence of drug-resistant pathogens endemic to the hospital environment.
