notifiable disease

Any disease of humans or animals that must be notified, by law, to a health officer or local authority. The majority of these diseases are serious infectious diseases, such as meningitis, tetanus, and whooping cough in humans and anthrax and foot and mouth in sheep and cows. Some industrial diseases, such as lung diseases related to the inhalation of asbestos, are also notifiable.

As dengue fever is a legally notifiable disease in China, the researchers were able to retrieve the monthly incidence of dengue fever from the Notifiable Infectious Disease Report System in the China Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
