nuée ardenteRapidly flowing, glowing white-hot cloud of ash and gas emitted by a volcano during a violent eruption. The ash and other pyroclastics in the lower part of the cloud behave like an ash flow. In 1902 a nuée ardente produced by the eruption of Mount Pelee in Martinique swept down the volcano in a matter of seconds and killed 28,000 people in the nearby town of St Pierre.
