oathSolemn promise to tell the truth or perform some duty, combined with a declaration naming a deity or something held sacred. In English courts, witnesses normally swear to tell the truth holding a New Testament in their right hand. If a witness wishes, he or she may swear an oath on a holy book other than the New Testament by prior arrangement. People who object to the taking of oaths, such as Quakers (members of the Society of Friends) and atheists, give a solemn promise (affirmation) to tell the truth. In the USA, witnesses raise their right hand in taking the oath. How to thank TFD for its existence? The trembling clown replied that as he lived and by the oath he had sworn (though he had not sworn any) it was not so much; for there were to be taken into account and deducted three pairs of shoes he had given him, and a real for two blood-lettings when he was sick. As a further provision for the efficacy of the federal powers, they took an oath mutually to defend and protect the united cities, to punish the violators of this oath, and to inflict vengeance on sacrilegious despoilers of the temple. |
