The opening strings of the octobass.

Musical instrument, a three-stringed double bass of huge size invented in 1849 by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume in Paris. It was capable of playing extremely low notes, but its strings were so thick and heavy that they had to be stopped by means of levers and pedals. It was very unwieldy and never became widely used.
