Offertory

The fourth part of the Roman Catholic Mass Proper, in which the bread and wine are placed on the altar, preceding the Credo and Communion. In musical terms, a psalm in the form of a plainsong was originally sung, but composers including Palestrina and Lassus have written polyphonic works for the Offertory. The term is also used in other denominations of the Christian church.
