Branch of philosophy concerned with the study of being. In the 20th century, the German philosopher Martin Heidegger distinguished between an ‘ontological’ enquiry (an enquiry into ‘Being’) and an ‘ontic’ enquiry (an enquiry into a specific kind of entity).
