Odonata

Insect order comprising the dragonflies and damselflies. This group contains some 4,500 species arranged in 500 genera.

Classification

Odonata is in subclass Pterygota, class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda.

There are three suborders: Zygoptera, the damselflies, have large eyes which are widely separated, and hold the wings vertically above the abdomen at rest; Anisozygoptera contains most fossil forms and only two extant species; Anisoptera, the dragonflies, have large eyes, never widely separated, and hold the wings horizontal at rest.
