Benedictine order

Religious order of monks and nuns in the Roman Catholic Church, founded by St Benedict at Subiaco, Italy, in the 6th century. It had a strong influence on medieval learning and reached the height of its prosperity early in the 14th century.

There are Benedictine monasteries in the US in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and St Meinrad, Indiana. In 1985 there were 9,453 monks and 7,911 nuns living in Benedictine convents.
