ordinary share

Type of share in a company. Ordinary shareholders receive a variable rate of dividend. When company profits are high, the dividends will be high also. If the company is doing badly, it may well reduce or even stop paying any dividend to ordinary shareholders. Ordinary shareholders have only second claim on dividends after preference shareholders.
