organology

Branch of musicology which is concerned with the systematic study and classification of musical instruments, their history, design, fabrication, and taxonomy. Canon Francis Galpin's Old English Instruments of Music (1910) was one of the first works to attempt to deal with musical instruments systematically. The scholarly society formed in 1945 in his name - the Galpin Society - is a focus for British organologists. Its counterpart in the USA is the American Musical Instrument Society (formed in 1974).
