orthochromatic

Photographic film or paper of decreased sensitivity, which can be processed with a red safelight. Using it, blue objects appear lighter and red ones darker because of increased blue sensitivity.

Holm was pointing out the differences in shading between orthochromatic and panchromatic film, but I think the corollary is "old photos may be staged so they could fib a little too".
10) Martha Rosler points out that many early landscape photographs were double-exposed or double-printed to render clouds in the sky because the orthochromatic emulsions of the era were incapable of achieving results where clouds and landscape were both correctly exposed at once.
This is referred to as panchromatic film and is used today for all except special applications where orthochromatic film has advantages.
