Osmunda

A genus of ferns that have brown sporangia (reproductive organs) in branched masses at the tips of the huge fronds where the leafy portion disappears. The fronds may grow to a length of 2 m/6 ft. Fossil remains of Osmunda are found worldwide, dating from the late Cretaceous period. Osmunda root fibre, which is used in the cultivation of orchids, is mainly obtained from the North American O. claytoniana.
