ouzel

Ancient name for the blackbird. The ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus) is similar to a blackbird, but has a white band across the breast. It is found in Europe in mountainous and rocky country. Water ouzel is another name for the dipper.

Walkers reported ring ouzels and snow buntings high in the Carneddau this week, with a few closer to sea level: a bunting at Rhoscolyn, four ouzels at South Stack and one on the Great Orme.
Dunlins declined in 59% of the South Pennines sites surveyed, meadow pipits in 29%, wheatears in 46%; twites in 80% and ring ouzels in 64% In contrast, the curlew increased in 108% of South Pennine sites, with whinchats increasing in 136%.
Eggs from song thrushes thinned 6 percent, mistle thrushes 4 percent, and ring ouzels 2 percent.
