ovation

In ancient Rome, a lesser form of victory procession (triumph) awarded to a victorious Roman general who had achieved minor success or success in a minor war.

The Senate did not head the procession and the general entered on foot or horseback instead of in a chariot. The general was dressed in an ordinary magistrate's robe, instead of the special tunic and toga worn for a triumph, and he was crowned with myrtle instead of laurel. A sheep was sacrificed instead of an ox.
