overtone chanting

In alternative medicine, a type of sound therapy with roots in Tibetan meditational practices.

The technique involves chanting in such a way as to produce overtones or harmonics; these are sounds pitched above the voice, with no fixed spatial location, but appearing to come from all round. They resemble the sound produced by running a wet finger around the rim of a glass. The practice is used to reduce stress levels and enhanced well-being; a version of it, developed in the 1970s and 1980s in the USA and the UK by Rudolph Murley, uses different sounds to correct energy imbalances affecting different physical organs.
