oyer and terminer

Judicial circuit established in the 13th century and convening more frequently than the existing eyre. They were established specifically to hear pleas of the crown (cases involving a serious breach of the king's peace) and were often presided over by junior judges or sergeants. They were assimilated into the courts of assizes.

When the Court of Oyer and Terminer resumed its sessions on June 28, the judges continued as before to rely on spectral evidence and validate the behavior of the afflicted, and so did the officials who heard complaints, conducted examinations, urged the accused to confess, and authorized arrest warrants.
Later that month, Governor Phips prohibited any further jailing and dissolved the Court of Oyer and Terminer.
