oyster catcher

Any of several quite large, chunky shorebirds, with a long, heavy bill which is flattened at the sides and used to prise open the shells of oysters, mussels, and other shellfish. (Family Haematopodidae, order Charadriiformes.)

The black and white American oyster catcher (Haematopus palliatus) is found on the Atlantic and South Pacific coasts.
