packet radio

In computing, the use of amateur (ham) radio, instead of telephones, to communicate between computers. A terminal node controller (TNC) replaces the modem, a radio transceiver takes the place of the telephone, and the phone system is replaced by radio waves. Packet radio, which works on several different frequencies, has a complete network of its own, complete with satellite links and terrestrial relays. It cannot be used to access the Internet, but it can be connected through the Internet.
