Pampa

Seat of Gray County, northwest Texas, USA, 88 km/55 mi northeast of Amarillo; population (2000) 17,900. Situated in the Panhandle oil and natural gas field, it is a service centre with machine shops and supply companies, and is one of the world's largest producers of carbon black, used as a reinforcing filler for rubber, and in the manufacture of paints, plastics, and other products. It was established on the Santa Fe railway in 1888, and continues to be a processing and shipping point for the region's cattle and wheat.
