In various religions, a place or state of happiness. Examples are the Garden of Eden and the Messianic kingdom; the Islamic paradise of the Koran is a place of sensual pleasure.

Paradise

Town in Butte County, northern-central California, USA, on the West Branch of the Feather River, northwest of Lake Oroville, 18 km/11 mi east of Chico; population (1990) 25,400. Situated in the western Sierra Nevada foothills, it is a tourist and fruit-growing centre, and an increasingly popular retirement community.

Paradise

Southern suburb of Las Vegas, southeastern Nevada, USA, on the east side east of the Strip (main street); population (1990) 124,700. Paradise experienced a 400% increase in population between 1970 and 1990, its growth being part of the immense expansion of the Las Vegas area. It is the seat of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (1957).
