part song

Technically, any song composed for a number of vocal parts, often used to describe madrigals, but generally referring to songs of homophonic texture, that is, where the melody is sung in the top voice and the other voices provide harmonic accompaniment. Part song is associated with 19th-century choral works by composers including Robert Schumann, Hubert Parry, and Edward Elgar.
