passamezzo

    0.03 sec.

passamezzo

Brisk dance of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, popular not only in Italy but throughout Europe. Its name is probably due to the fact that it was a more lively form of the pavane. It consisted basically of variations on a ground bass. The passamezzo antico was in the minor key, the passamezzo moderno in the major key. See romanesca.
