pastorale

Type of 17th-century opera, or opera-ballet, with recitatives, airs (verse songs), and choruses. It was often produced on festive occasions and treated pastoral subjects in a courtly and artificial manner, often allegorically. Its origin was the pastoral drama of the 16th century. In later times the term pastorale has been often used as a title for all kinds of compositions of a pastoral character.
